Rug Care

Terry's Tips

Rotation

To prevent sun fading and ensure even wear, rotate your rugs 1-2 times a year.

Underpad

Extend your rug’s life and protect your rugs on hard surfaces like hardwood floors, tiles, or marble by using appropriate pads.

Vacuuming

Regular vacuuming is essential to keep your rugs looking their best. Use a floor attachment only, avoiding roller or beater bars. Always vacuum in a single direction, following the natural nap of the rug. Historically, rugs were cared for by sweeping and brushing with traditional brooms and brushes.

Rug Cleaning

Every 3-5 years, consider professional handwashing by experts like Terry. Even if your rugs aren’t subjected to regular foot traffic, they benefit from refreshing and restoring their fibres.

Remember, dry cleaning and steam cleaning can be detrimental to natural fibres such as wool, silk, and cotton. The best method is professional handwashing.

Spot Cleaning

Immediate action is your best defence against spills and accidents. You likely have all the necessary tools for spot cleaning at home. Products like Scotch Guard and various powders or sprays can do more harm than good, leaving residues that are difficult to remove and may reappear as stains in future washings.

Step-By-Step Spot Clean Guide

  1.  Add water to the spill to dilute it.
  2. Remove excess spill by carefully scooping out liquids with a spoon (the traditional method) or by using a Vacuum (ShopVac or similar). Avoid blotting, as it can push the spill deeper into the rug.
  3. Prepare a simple solution: 1 cup of warm water, 1-2 drops of mild dish soap (gentle on the hands), and half a teaspoon of white vinegar. Mix and agitate.
  4. Pour the solution onto the spot and gently scrub or brush to agitate the fibres. Remove excess liquid with a vacuum or spoon. Repeat as needed.
  5. Rinse with clean water, then vacuum or scoop out any remaining liquid. Repeat the process as necessary.
  6. While the rug is still damp, brush the pile in the original direction of the nap. Allow the rug to air dry. Once completely dry, brush the pile again to restore its natural soft look. Voilà!
